Journey Using Multimedia LTEC 5220

Using multimedia has been an enlightening experience. My original experience with multimedia focused on visual elements and web design.  Audio and video elements have been foreign to me. Using them has stretched me out in a positive way. One of the most valuable things I have learned was storyboarding. It is good to have some of the templates learned in this class. I wish I had a more powerful computer and more fancy equipment to do these audio and video projects. The static in the back is notable. Another thing I have learned was the need for professional actors to do these things. My voice isn’t great, I am more used to my voice.  If not, I need to practice more. While much of the visual arts things is new, it is amazing to see the technological progression that has taken place. Especially from the web end. I haven’t done much web work since the early 2000s. CSS seems completely new to me.  Still the fundamentals are still important.  I do feel my prior e...

Video LTEC 5220

Creating video  was definitely one of the most challenging tasks of this course.  Here is the final product.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B849B2swlrc&feature=youtu.be For some reason, the bread that I made was not nearly as good as the practice rounds that I had.  Had this been professional, I would have had to restart the whole thing. Storyboarding was for the most part a big help. My cameraman didn’t pay much attention to the storyboard, so that was frustrating.  I missed out on the washing on the hands, and the design document reflects this change.  This shows the importance of good communication with your camera crew.  This is also a multiple person operation.  Had this not been a web class, this might have been a good group project.  I didn’t put as much detail as I would have liked to. That is something to keep in mind in the future. I really enjoyed playing with open source Shotcut, rather than Adobe Premiere.  If...

Images, Text and audio part 2 LTEC 5220

Developing both for audio and visual components is had many complications and was difficult. It would have been even more difficult had we not done audio and visual projects before we did this one.  It does feel good to be more proficient at Audacity and InDesign compared to our previous assignments.  Taking the time to do both is time consuming, and I am not sure if it is always worth the time to do them. Some of the problems with this form of instruction as mentioned in our class discussion was the technology standards. PDF’s don’t play sounds in some browsers.  Flash is not found on all browsers. This extra effort often can be wasted.  Unlike a video, I can easily see people skipping over the audio instructions and just reading the text and looking at the images. That being said, I have seen some unexpected benefits. Unlike my audio only presentation, where I used a “beep” to separate the sections, it was nice to just have a separate PDF page separating the ...

Images, Text and Audio Part 1 LTEC 5220

After reading the prompt for this unit, I immediately thought about how a standard lecture in a modern-day classroom also has visual/ images/ auditory stimuli.  At least one with a well-designed PowerPoint presentation. Lecture has the added bonus of discussion, and allowing the teachers to adapt their lessons to their situation.  That isn’t necessarily a knock-on technology that can provide the audio/visual experience.  It is saying that the modern classroom also is evolving and bettering itself wither it be a chalkboard, an overhead projector or a PowerPoint presentation. That being said, taking this completely online, grad school program, I see the benefits of having the technology to use images, text and audio.  Reading long articles in PDFs can be difficult.  The extra audio and images sense would help me understand it.  Not to mention be helpful to the blind and the dyslexic.    While the reading of long PDF articles makes sense for a ...

Audio Instruction Part 2 LTEC 5220

Project for the week. https://classes.lt.unt.edu/Summer_10W_2017/LTEC_5220_020/spt0052/Teng_Project_4.htm Creating audio only material was far more difficult for me than visual material. Growing up my parents tried to make me learn an instrument, and to even learn how to do the sound board at church.  I was always attracted to visual arts over the audio. Creating audio files stretched me in a good way. The first challenge was reading the text. I am not particularly articulate, and listening to my voice was a bit difficult. The perfectionist in me tried to redo each part over and over. Unfortunately, I would fix one mistake, but then make another. Trying to combine audio files in audacity took patience.  Moreover, listening to something over and over, makes it harder and harder to judge it.  All the words start sounding the same after a while.  I found that I could catch errors only after I took a several hour break.  This helped clear the mind, and helped ...

Audio Instruction Part 1 LTEC 5220

Audio-only instruction has many benefits over visual style learning. Younger students, tend to “prefer listening over reading” (Barron, 2004) . It is hypothesized that struggles with younger students do better because they have with less literary experience. As an educator, I understand that many students, especially those of lower socioeconomic status do not have reading levels to that match their grade level.  While it is important to teach reading skills, as a non-English speaker, having audio versions of some lessons would be a benefit for these students.  For adult learners, audio learning is also a benefit. I am an avid audiobook reader. As a member of the amazon company, audible.com, I own 459 titles. One of the disadvantages many people point out with audio learning, is that conversation usually is spoken at 150 words per minute (wpm) while many students can read at 250-300 wpm (Barron, 2004) .  Audible has a technology that allows readers to increase the pa...
