I must admit this entry is very similar to my previous entry. What were some of the advantages and disadvantages of combining text with images for instructional design. As mentioned in the previous entry, not only are some of advantages of both methods (text only, or images only) seen in this approach, but some of the disadvantages are seen.
The advantages of being able to use both text and images is the fact that both media are good at presenting somethings while poor at presenting others. A picture might be worth a thousand words, but people have different ideas about what “sugar” is. On the other hand, as articulate as someone might be, there are somethings pictures can show us that text has many difficulties with. A diagram showing someone how to fold an origami bird is far more effective than just describing it with words. Using both techniques makes it far easier. As mentioned in the article by Kozma, Learning with Media, when images are added to text, comprehension increases for all types of readers.
That being said there are disadvantages with both approaches. Images take up a lot of memory in a computer, and they take a long time to create. Images when printed use a lot of ink. Moreover, text is only available in one language. Moreover, not everyone is literate. That being said, it seems like books and the images seem to be full of images and text. The market seems to have favored this approach.
I learned much from this project. As mentioned on my previous entries, storyboarding things on a separate page was a helpful thing to do. It saved a lot of time. Because images were created last week, the project was much quicker to produce. InDesign has a bit of a learning curve. I still prefer Microsoft Word or Publisher. InDesign did not do a perfect job of transferring semi-transparent colors. I found InDesign particularly lacking with backgrounds. I could not export color backgrounds into PDF format.
I imagine if I were to work on something professional, I would have a team of illustrators and writers to help design a product. I do see how this course provides the “value added” component. It is important to know that our customer needs. And try our best to provide the most appropriate solution rather than the flashiest one. I look forward to adding sound next week to our portfolio.
