Developing both for audio and visual components is had many
complications and was difficult. It would have been even more difficult had we
not done audio and visual projects before we did this one. It does feel good to be more proficient at
Audacity and InDesign compared to our previous assignments. Taking the time to do both is time consuming,
and I am not sure if it is always worth the time to do them.
Some of the problems with this form of instruction as mentioned
in our class discussion was the technology standards. PDF’s don’t play sounds
in some browsers. Flash is not found on
all browsers. This extra effort often can be wasted. Unlike a video, I can easily see people
skipping over the audio instructions and just reading the text and looking at
the images.
That being said, I have seen some unexpected benefits. Unlike
my audio only presentation, where I used a “beep” to separate the sections, it
was nice to just have a separate PDF page separating the sections of the
recording. Moreover, I did have some miscellaneous
and extra information that learners did not have to listen to. With buttons, I made it so it was optional
for them to listen. I assume when I get good at it, it is easier to use humor
with your voice than it is with images and text.
Honestly, the thing I liked the most about this recent
lesson would be learning how to use buttons. I have had some flash experience
in the past. It is amazing to see how
fast the technology has advanced. I can’t imagine what I could actually do with
the flash software. Admittedly that would take even longer to do.
If I were to do this project over again, I would not waste
time making navigation buttons. Those took a while to make, and I didn’t
realize that acrobat and flash already had that functionality. I decided to stick with PDF to follow the
original instructions. It seems like the flash worked more effectively. For the purposes of time, I reused my
recordings from week 6 and the pages from week 4. However, as mentioned in the online
conference, I should probably story board things in the future. I had more time to tweek with it I probably
would have added the pictures I took of actually baking the bread. I assume in
the future. Making the icons was fun, but actual photos would be more time
effective.
I am looking forward to videos next week.
