Week 11 Blog
By the end of this week, your full initial development
must be completed. Were you able to finish according to your timeline? Why
or why not?
What technology challenges have you faced? What “people”
challenges have you faced? How have you sought to overcome these difficulties? What
have you learned about completing a major project within a professional
deadline? What will you do differently next time?
What were your strengths as a designer?
What do you need to improve?
What do you need to improve?
What a difference a week makes. Due to COVID 19, I got furloughed
for a few weeks. Thus, I had a lot of free
time this week, and I have been able to get a lot done. It is incredible how
much I could get done when I don’t have a full-time job to worry about.
There are a lot of challenges in this course. My old
teaching PowerPoints had a lot of breakpoints where I could ask the class a
question, do demonstrate something. I had to spend a lot of time rewriting my PowerPoints.
I also had difficulties with links. Canvas screens every site you put in as a
link on the modules. My solution was to create assignments and add the links
there. While not currently a problem, I see
creating job aides for each of these games will be difficult. I have already
logged into Geniverse and taken screenshots on how to set up a class.
While these games are a large portion of the course, I worry
about depending too much on them. If the site is taken down, or if students are
unable to access the game, that the course would no longer be useful. Thankfully
I have added a whole lot of material.
As with most things in my life, I had a difficult time organizing
my thoughts. I came in with so many different ideas to put down on paper, I
never got to sit down to get things done.
I also didn’t spend enough time learning the canvas system. I wasted a
lot of time recreating things that didn’t need to. My strength as an
instructional designer is the opposite side of the coin with my weakness. Because
I have so many ideas, when I can finally sit down and focus, I can make
excellent material. I also have a strong
sense of design, which I have not been able to show much of.
Looking at my two partners’ sites, I really overthought
this. My modules are overstuffed, where theirs seem to be appropriately sized. Next time I create a course, I will create
more modules and if I only have 6 weeks, I will just give students multiple
modules a week. I also wasted a lot of time trying to put everything into the
modules. A simple video page would probably have worked just fine. If an instructor
wants to remove or add a video, on my current site, they would have to change
the video in two places rather than one.
